The Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department was
established on December 21, 1887 by the then village
council, after a devastating fire that destroyed much of
the downtown of the fledging community. Ironwood had no
fire department until that time, and if not for the
assistance of the Hurley, Wisconsin Fire Department,
across the river from Ironwood, the entire downtown and
perhaps the whole community may have been lost.
In the ensuing 120 years the IVFD has continuously
served the citizens of Ironwood, and Erwin Township.
Ironwood Township was also served by the IVFD until 1972
when Ironwood Township created it's own volunteer fire
department. Mutual aid agreements are in effect with all
surrounding communities.
The IVFD has 23 active members at present. There are
also 5 Honorary members, and two retired Life member one
with over 40 years of membership. The IVFD also has
several "Fire Fighters Emeritus" who have been active
members, but for one reason or another were not able to
remain as active members.
The Department is divided into administrative and
operational sections.
The officers are:
Barb Allen - President
Jeremy Wallston - Vice President
Robert Tervonen - Secretary
Robert Tervonen - Treasurer
John LaChapelle - Trustee
Desiree Peite- Trustee
Larry Coron - Trustee
Operational officers are:
Ken Jacobson - Chief
Micheal Weimeri - Assistant Chief
Ron Clemens - Captain
Dan Laabs - Captain
Jeremy Walston - Captain
Kenneth Jacobson - EMS Officer
Duane Brown - Training Officer
As with any volunteer department, the IVFD members come
from all walks of life. It has included, among others,
various local government employees, cooks, paramedics,
nurses, students, bus drivers, factory workers,
carpenters and business owners, both female and male.
These citizens are trained, not only in all aspects of
fire fighting and fire prevention, but in first aid,
CPR, rescue, and hazardous materials mitigation as well.
The IVFD maintains membership in the Upper Peninsula
Volunteer Firefighters' Association, Upper Peninsula
Fire Chiefs' Association, U.P. Volunteer Firefighters'
Museum, and the Gogebic County Firefighters' Training
Council.
The members of the Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department
are proud of the department's more than 120 years of
service to the citizens of the communities it serves,
and look forward to continuing in the finest tradition
of the fire service.
The Ironwood
Volunteer Fire Department along with the Bessemer
Township Volunteer Fire Department have hosted the
112th U. P. Volunteer Firefighters' Association Tournament
on July 27-29th, 2006.
