The Ironwood Community Development Department is
responsible for administering Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG/HOME) funds for the rehabilitation of
existing single family homes. Special grants were
written in 2000 and 2002 for the downtown area
(Neighborhood Preservation Program) which involved the
rehabilitation of rental units. The focus of both
programs is to assist low and moderate income households
with home improvements to achieve building code
compliance and energy efficiency.
Rehabilitation often includes upgrading of electrical
services and wiring, repairing or replacing substandard
plumbing, window and door replacement, heating equipment
improvements and roofing and exterior improvements such
as painting and siding. Along with the CDBG and HOME
funds, this office will help package Michigan State
Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) low interest
property improvement loans. With a low interest rate
loan from MSHDA ($25,000 maximum loan amount for one
unit), a homeowner can do just about anything. And up to
20 years to repay, the homeowner can keep their monthly
payments affordable. Michigan licensed contractors
wanted, female and minority contractors encouraged to
apply. Questions regarding Ironwood's Housing Grant
Programs can be directed to Jane Bowman at 932-5050.
